Sad, sad news here at Lydia Street.
Since this has been the year for unpredictable weather it’s hard to know what to expect next. We had a mild winter and an early spring, a devastating hail storm then temperatures reaching 104 degrees.
We created a new planting area next to our neighbor’s house to help mask the less-than-attractive view. Our hope was that the sunflowers we planted would fill the area with color.
Then the storm came. And we looked at each other and said, “This is why we can’t have nice things!”
We’re just grateful that we hadn’t yet completed the banner design for the new arbor or it too would have been ripped to shreds.

Our wild winds are doing the same things here, but how I hate to see sunflowers succumb! They are the happy flowers for sure. By the way, I love your blog and I have nominated you for TWO awards. I didn’t want to “like” it because I know full well how it feels to nurture and grow something for months only to have a straight line wind or tornado destroy it. The good news – that you really don’t want to hear right now, is – you can plan some more next year. I’m really sorry..
Thank you Kelli. This was our first attempt at sunflowers but I think we WILL try them again next year.
Poor you, they were such great sunflowers. I hope you are able to save some and prop them up but perhaps not. I’m sure you will rescue the area and make it pretty again.
Yes, we’ve been able to prop some up and we’re cutting the broken ones. Thanks, gardening is a lesson in acceptance.
I’m sorry the sunflowers didn’t make it, the weather has been so bad the past few summers for growing things.
